Does it matter which way you train?
A story published today on MSNBC.com explores whether it’s better to train with free weights (barbells and dumbbells), to use machines (e.g., Nautilus), or to combine free-weight exercises with BOSU balance trainers or stability balls.
For most people, this is a non-issue. Experienced lifters and other elite athletes usually employ a combination of methods, depending on their goals. People who are brand-new to training can use any of those approaches: the point is, just do something.
The MSNBC piece mentions the benefits that free weights provide, namely enhancing balance and working smaller, stabilizing muscles as well as larger muscles because the trainee must control the weight throughout the movement, as well as the slightly greater danger of injury if the trainee doesn’t know what she’s doing.
When you’re learning free-weight exercises, you need someone who knows the movement to teach you. Let’s hope the people employed at your gym can do this. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to know a community of lifters who can help you along and spot you when you lift heavy.
But even machines can be used properly or improperly. Ask a gym employee to show you how they work. Or ask someone who looks like she knows what she’s doing.
Just do something. Join a gym. Learn some exercises, hire a trainer, take a class.
You can lose bodyfat and do cardio until you’re blue in the face, but if you don’t strengthen your gorgeous muscles, you’ll never develop the body of your dreams.
